Description

In 1904, an engineering student named Clarence Spicer left Cornell University to launch a new business in the empty corner of a New Jersey factory. When he was still a student, Spicer had obtained the patent for his groundbreaking project of the first universal joint capable of propelling a car. Spicer's innovation would literally mean freedom for the automobile, which had previously been tied to sprockets and chains for power transmission. But in the beginning, this new Spicer venture was decidedly a bold step. Engineer and inventor of talent, Spicer had no experience in business or production. And although the car was destined to become a global institution, its future was still far from certain at the turn of the twentieth century. It was from this uncertain beginning that Dana Incorporated emerged as one of the most influential automotive suppliers in the world. Founded on Spicer's projects and fueled by the commercial acumen of lawyer, politician and financier Charles Dana, the company thrived and expanded its product line, its technological know-how and geographic scope during the century. Along the way, Dana Incorporated has also fueled a progressive, people-oriented culture that has given a unique dimension to its products and services. Building on these strengths, Dana Incorporated's products helped move the best vehicles in history, from Model T and World War II Jeep® to London cabs, 18-wheeled trucks, giant earthmoving machines and all race of the NASCAR® circuit. And as it enters its second century, Dana Incorporated continues to follow the principles of its historical heritage. The Dana staff continues their quest for innovation. And the company continues to produce according to the commitment to develop the science of mobility for the benefit of its global customers.
